COMMON NAME:
► Gardenia
SCIENTIFIC NAME:
► Gardenia
GROWER HINTS:
►Wonderful for that spot that is too sunny for shade plants but not sunny enough for full sun plants. Why pay more for a grafted variety? Grafted Gardenias are grown on the Gardenia thunbergia root stock. This is a very vigorous , disease resistant Gardenia. You will have a bigger plant, fewer yellow leaves and a much better chance of success. Monrovia Nursery Company is one of the few remaining growers that do grafted Gardenias. They cost more but are worth every extra penny especially along the coast where we don’t get warm enough to always keep Gardenias happy.
GROWTH HABITS:
►To make buds Gardenias need nighttime temperatures at least close to 60 and daytime temps over 70. Mulch the roots to keep them cool. All Gardenias tend to have yellow leaves after the winter chill. Give them warm weather, fertilizer and iron and they will soon be better.
SHADE/SUN:
►Gardenias really enjoy warm weather. Give at least a half day warm sun. Gardenias are not a good shade plant.
FEEDING AND WATERING:
►Feed in the spring and summer. Use E.B. Stone Azalea / Camellia food, Cottonseed meal or Mir-Acid. It’s smart to add some extra chelated iron too, especially in spring.
FLOWER/FOLIAGE COLOR(S):
►Dark green shinny leaves. Flowers are white or yellow. Wonderful fragrance!
SEASON(S) CARRIED AT WEIDNERS:
►Spring/Summer intermittently.
CONTAINER OR GROUND?
►Plant in good well drained soil, amended with Azalea / Camellias mix or Weidners planting mix. Mulch the roots to keep them cool. If you have clay or poor draining soil grow your Gardenias in a large pot.
