COMMON NAME:
► Mandevilla
SCIENTIFIC NAME:
► Mandevilla
GROWERS HINTS:
►Meet the Mandevillas. Two different growth habits. The original Mandevilla ‘Crimson Parasol’ grows as a basket. Crimson giant and Mini both grow as climbers. Crimson Parasol regular and mini vine and many other newer colors are all by Suntory plant breeders.
►An elegant vine for full to half day sun. Grows rapidly and blooms with showy red flowers. Suggestion: plant Sweet Pea seeds in early October to climb on the Mandevilla and bloom all winter when the mandevilla is resting. Mandevillas need very good drainage! Happiest in a container.
GROWTH HABITS:
►Mandevillas need very good drainage. They prefer to be in containers and will drown easily in the winter if there is excessive water. If needed cut back about ½ to 1/3 in the spring…After new growth starts!
SHADE/SUN:
►Sun, at least 6 hours per day.
FEEDING AND WATERING:
►Feed often during blooming/growing season, every 2 weeks is good. Check every other day to see if they need watering but remember not to drown them, they do not like soggy roots.
FLOWER/FOLIAGE COLOR(S):
►Blooming season is spring, summer into late fall. Showy red flowers and dark green shiny leaves.
SEASON(S) CARRIED AT WEIDNERS:
►Spring/Summer
CONTAINER OR GROUND?
►They prefer to be in containers and will drown easily in the winter if there is excessive water. If your soil is heavy plant them in large pots. If you have good well draining soil, try them in the ground.
PARTICULAR PESTS:
►Mandevillas get aphids every spring. Hose them off with a strong spray of water. Products are available to use in addition if needed. Aphids multiply by the thousands, almost overnight, so spray often in aphid season.
