COMMON NAME:
? Oriental and Asiatic Lilies
SCIENTIFIC NAME:
?
GROWER HINTS:
?Lilies are surprisingly easy to grow in your garden. They are stunning in between roses, in a blooming flower border or in deep pots. The Oriental lilies are fragrant, the Asiatic lilies are not. They bloom from July to September, which is really nice, since many of the early flowers are finished blooming. Remember that the pollen of the lily will stain your clothes.
GROWTH HABITS:
?Planting: Keep your bulbs in the refrigerator until you plant or they will start to grow immediately. Plant them within a week or two placing the bulbs about 3 times the height of the bulb itself. After your lily blooms let the foliage die down and then cut off. They will come up again next spring and will multiply by themselves in your garden. You may want to stake your lily as it grows. They are best planted at the back of the border with the shorter, fuller plants in front of them to shade the roots.
SHADE/SUN:
?They all like sun along the coast and a bit of shade inland.
FEEDING AND WATERING:
?Bone meal is a good fertilizer for any bulb. Do not over water or this will cause bulb rot
FLOWER/FOLIAGE COLOR(S):
?The best known of the Oriental lilies is the Stargazer with its deep red pink color, freckles and wonderful scent. Asiatic’s are more vibrant in color with bright yellows, oranges and reds, with examples like Candida water lilies being adorned in pure whites.
