► Please note: These instructions are for our mild Californian temperate weather. It won’t work in other areas so don’t try it if you live where it freezes. Ask any group of people how many of them have killed their Cyclamen and at least half the hands go up. Cyclamen are great plants. Why do they die for people so easily? Because buyers are not given good advice and treat their cyclamen all wrong.The tags that go with most cyclamen are for all over the country and there’s not enough room to give separate instructions for those of us who live in Southern California. So, here’s the scoop on growing Cyclamen here: Most important thing to remember is that Cyclamen are cool weather outdoor plants. Some people who live in chilly homes are successful with Cyclamen indoors, most of us are not.
GROWTH HABITS:
► Cyclamen are cool weather outdoor plants. You should have blooms until late spring. When summer comes, the leaves will fall off. The easiest way to take care of it is “no care”. Just sort of forget all about it. If you are lucky and lived right, it will come back all by itself the next winter.
SHADE/SUN:
►They like good bright shade, maybe a little early morning sun, but never hot mid-day sun.
FEEDING AND WATERING:
► Feed with a liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks. Water regularly, Cyclamen do not like to get dry!
FLOWER/FOLIAGE COLOR(S):
► Dark green leaves, some with silvery highlights. Blooms are white, red, pink, or pink and white.
SEASON(S) CARRIED AT WEIDNERS:
► Winter and Spring to early Summer.
CONTAINER OR GROUND:
► When planting Cyclamen, be sure that you don’t plant it too deep. It is a tuber and appreciates having its crown well above the ground. Plant it in good, rich, porous soil or leave it in a pot.
