GROWER HINTS:
► Welcome to the big part of the Begonia family called angel wings or cane begonias. These begonias have leaves that are shaped a little like angel wings and the stems are fairly heavy and cane like. (That’s how common names come into being.) These types of begonias are really easy. They take the hotter inland areas and last for years.
GROWTH HABITS:
► We grow several kinds. Most of ours grow to a moderate height of about 3 to 4 feet. Cut this type of begonia back in mid-spring, March or April. Always leave at least 3 to 5 leaf nodes beneath your cut. This is where the new growth will come.
SHADE/SUN:
► These are among the easiest plants to grow in the shade garden. Plant them to the back of a shade bed or leave in a container.Most angel wing begonias like to have some shade. It is an amazingly large group of begonias so some will take the sun quite easily. It also depends so much on where in the world you live. Go to Germany and the non-stop begonias are happy in full sun. In Southern California they prefer some shade. We have less humidity and a stronger sun. Go to the hot Arizona climate and they will shrivel and die no matter what. Way too hot and dry. Always ask and pay attention to your plant. Dragon Wings is in this same cane/angel wing group but here in the Southern California climate it will take either sun or shade.
FEEDING AND WATERING:
► Like all begonias, angel wings don’t like to be over watered. Feed regularly.
FLOWER/FOLIAGE COLOR(S):
► They make big splashy plants with graceful sprays of pink, white,red or orange begonia flowers.
SEASON(S) CARRIED AT WEIDNERS:
► All season except full winter time.
CONTAINER OR GROUND:
► Plant in the ground in the back of a shade garden or in big pots.
PARTICULAR PESTS:
► Watch for snails and slugs. Whiteflies can be a problem (but what’s new about that?)
